TESTING AND CERTIFICATION

HAZARDOUS LOCATIONS - ATEX, IECEx, HAZLOC, MILITARY AND AEROSPACE

COMPLIANCE WITH DSEAR - Compliance with Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR) encompasses many facets of business activity which is a concept that is not readily understood. DSEAR involves:

  • Risk assessment of plant operations

  • Defining of any hazardous zones together

  • Installation of hazard compliant equipment

TESTING FOR GENERAL PRODUCT SAFETY DIRECTIVE

General Product Safety Directive has been implemented in all EU countries, giving authorities the power to undertake a recall of consumer products without the co-operation of the manufacturer or retailer. General Product Safety Directive regulations cover traceability, batch marking and sample testing of products.

LIGHTNING TESTING

Lightning testing is required for equipment supplied to the aerospace industry and military aircraft. The increasing use of composite materials in the design of the aircraft superstructure, to reduce weight, means that equipment is more vulnerable to lightning effects. As a result the test standards has evolved and become more stringent. For new build aircraft, ALL equipment supplied must meet Safety of Flight (SOF) criteria, which includes lightning, prior to being installed and then full qualification testing.

TESTING FOR THE LOW VOLTAGE DIRECTIVE

The Low voltage directive 2006/95/EC is a CE marking Directive and applies to any electrical equipment designed for use with (either as an input or output) a voltage rating of between 50 and 1000 V for alternating current (AC) and between 75 and 1500 V for direct current (DC).

Applying to the vast majority of electrical equipment in everyday use the Low Voltage Directive states electrical equipment can only be placed on the market if it does not endanger the safety of persons, domestic animals or other equipment and goods. It is mandatory to CE Mark products that fall within the scope of this Directive and this must be supported by the correct documentation.

TRaC can provide all the services a manufacturer needs to meet the requirements of the Low Voltage Directive (LVD). There are key aspects which are mandatory and these must be in place before CE marking to this Directive can take place.

TESTING FOR MACHINERY SAFETY DIRECTIVE

The Machinery Safety Directive 98/37/EC requires designers, manufacturers and operators of machinery to be aware of their responsibility in providing safe machinery into the work place. TRaC is a Notified Body under the Machinery Safety Directive and can help you meet Machinery Directive compliance requirements by:

  • Assessing your machine against the Essential Health and Safety Requirements (EHSR) of the Machinery Directive with reference to EN standards

  • Conducting Risk Assessment in support of claims made for compliance with the EHSR

  • Assisting with compilation of the Technical File

  • Reviewing and auditing Technical Files and reporting on any shortcomings or deficiencies

TESTING FOR THE OUTDOOR NOISE DIRECTIVE

The European Directive 2000/14/EC amended by 2005/88/EC covers "Noise Emission in the Environment by Equipment for use Outdoors Regulations". It applies to outdoor machinery equipment manufacturers and ALL manufacturing establishments.

TESTING FOR PUWER AND PAD (Physical Agents Directive)

Employers have a responsibility under the PUWER (Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations) and PAD (Physical Agents Directive) to ensure that the equipment used by employees is safe and the environment conditions are also safe to work in.

RADIO / WIRELESS TESTING

TRaC has over 15 years experience in testing an extensive range of radios and RF devices from household applications right though to 100kW FM broadcast transmitters. The laboratories can perform measurements on equipment with a fundamental frequency of operation between 9kHz to 110GHz. Our facilities are UKAS accredited to EN17025 and are listed for both the FCC and Industry Canada.

SHIELDING EFFECTIVENESS TESTING

The shielding of facilities such as computer suites, hospital departments (MRIs, physio departments etc), airport terminals (such as Heathrow terminal 5), sensitive equipment rooms and test laboratories can be from a low level to a very high level of protection (shielding attenuation). This requires careful consideration and good design practices, which TRaC can fully assist the client with.
