THE INFANTRY

THE ROYAL IRISH REGIMENT

The Royal Irish Regiment was formed in July 1992, following the merger of the Ulster Defence Regiment and the Royal Irish Rangers. The Royal Irish Regiment is comprised of 1 x General Service, 1 x TA and 3 x Home Service Battalions.

The soldiers of the General Service Battalion (1 Royal Irish) operate as does any other unit of the Regular Army and in early 2003 the battalion was amongst the first British troops that entered Iraq.

The Home Service battalions serve only in Northern Ireland except for occasional training overseas and include both full-time and part time soldiers.
