INFANTRY BATTALION
ROTATION
Brunei: 1 RGR and 2 RGR will continue to rotate through
Brunei with battalion changes happening at roughly 30-36 month
intervals.
Cyprus: Battalions will be drawn from across the Adaptable
Force to fulfil the standing commitments in Cyprus.
State Ceremonial and Public Duties: Continues to be provided
by two of the five Foot Guards battalions and the incremental
companies in London and Scotland.
INFANTRY ARMY RESERVES BATTALIONS
There are 14 x Army Reserve Battalions and all of them are
affiliated to Regular Battalions. We believe that the eventual aim
is for all of these battalions to have a personnel strength of
around 500 by 2020 and there are longer term plans for whole
sub-unit deployments on some low intensity missions. In the short
term it would appear that the emphasis is on deploying platoons that
are properly trained and equipped alongside their regular
counterparts.

INFANTRY STRENGTH
During early 2016 the total infantry personnel figure will probably
be in the region of 24,000 (our estimate). In general, about 90 per
cent of infantry personnel are classified as deployable or ‘Fit for
Task’ at any one time.
During an average year we would expect to see about 2,400 recruits
joining the infantry. About 400 recruits would join the Guards
Division, 1,800 joining the Line Regiments and about 200 joining the
Parachute Regiment. In addition we would expect to see about 200
infantry officers leaving Sandhurst following commissioning.
Operational units
It would be unusual for the Infantry to fight as battalion units
especially in armoured or mechanised formations. If the task is
appropriate, the HQ of an infantry battalion will become the HQ of a
'battle group', and be provided with armour, artillery, engineers
and possibly aviation to enable it to become a balanced Battle
Group. Similarly Infantry Companies can be detached to HQs of
Armoured Regiments to make up Armoured Battle Groups.
In the pages that follow, the groupings are based on Unit
Establishment figures for peace support operations. For Warfighting
(High Intensity) a pairing mechanism operates which provides
augmentation which allows a unit to meet its role. For example, an
Armoured Infantry Regiment will receive additional Manoeuvre Support
assets and another Rifle Company to reach its Warfighting
Establishment (WFE) of 4 x Companies, 9 x Mortars and 18 x Medium
Range Anti-Tank Guided Weapons (ATGW).
It should be noted that the organisations listed next are under a
state of change as the demand of the Army 2020 structure become more
apparent. This is especially true of the organisations for the
manoeuvre support companies.
