The BMR (Blindado
Medio de Ruedas), also known as BMR-600, is a medium weight,
six-wheeled armoured vehicle built locally in Spain under French
license.
It is suited to perform a wide range of missions such as
troops transport, medical evacuation, fire support, mortar carrier,
command post, anti-tank missile carrier, etc.
Originally powered by a Pegaso 9157/8 306hp diesel engine, it has an
automatic gearbox, torque converter, independent suspension in all
six wheels and amphibious capability. It can also be transported by
air. It has received different kind of weapons throughout its life.
As part of its optional amphibious equipment, it has two hydrojets
for travel through water.
The Spanish Army is upgrading its BMR fleet (+650) to the BMR2
configuration with a new motor, additional armour, and protection
against NBC warfare.
The first BMR vehicles achieved initial operational capability with
the Spanish Army in 1979. It has been exported to Saudi Arabia, Egypt
and Peru. In 1991, the BMR saw combat for the first time with the
armed forces of Saudi Arabia during operation Desert Storm.
