The Fennek
Armed Reconnaissance Vehicle, produced by Krauss-Maffei Wegmann (KMW)
of Kassel, Germany and SP Aerospace and Vehicle Systems BV of The
Netherlands (the ARGE Fennek consortium), has been developed for the
Dutch and German Armies.
Equipped
with advanced reconnaissance sensors and a gun mount for self-defence
operable under armour and NBC protection, the vehicle, in conjunction
with its low height, low IR and radar signature as well as its
cross-country mobility, is the optimum surveillance vehicle also when
deployed far behind enemy lines.
The Fennek
has been deployed with the German forces in the ISAF mission in Kabul,
Afghanistan, since 2004.
The German Army has approx 116 armoured scout cars, along
with four artillery observation vehicles. Overall, the current
contract covers 202 Fennek vehicles for the German Army and 410
vehicles for the Dutch Army. The artillery observation vehicle was the first family vehicle
to be deployed in a foreign mission in Afghanistan. Its distinctive
characteristic compared to the scout car is its upgraded navigation
system which provides an extraordinarily high target location accuracy
in elevation and azimuth.
The Dutch armed forces, too, have deployed Fennek
vehicles to Afghanistan. Besides the variants used by the German
forces, the Dutch Army will be equipped with two additional variants.
These vehicles are MRAT versions (medium-range anti-tank), where the
observation equipment has been removed to provide space for
transporting guided missiles, as well as command and role-specific
vehicles with stowage space for general services. From 2007, the Dutch
forces received the Stinger Weapon Platform Fennek (SWP) with a firing unit for four medium-range air-defence
Stinger missiles. The Fennek SWP will be integrated into the future
air defence system of the Netherlands (FGBADS).
