MAIN BATTLE TANKS

M-60

The newer model M60 was the U.S. Army's basic main battle tank stationed in Europe (Germany) and South Korea during the Cold War. It was widely used by U.S. Cold War allies, especially other NATO countries.

The M60 Patton was the fourth and last of the Patton series medium tanks of the US Army and is one of the world's most successful main battle tanks.

The M60 served as the primary main battle tank of the Cold War, with models in service beginning in 1960 up through the 1990s. The M60 is in use in over 22 countries.

The M60 series main battle tanks of the US, Saudi Arabia and Egypt were deployed in Operation Desert Storm in 1991 during the Gulf War.

The tank has been continually upgraded with advanced weapon control systems, new ammunition, upgraded armour and increasingly powerful engines.

The main gun is the 105 mm M68 rifled gun which is fully stabilised in the elevation and traverse axes, and is fitted with a thermal sleeve. Both gunner and commander are able to fire the gun and select the type of ammunition to be fired. The coaxial weapon is the 7.62mm M240 machine gun.

The Continental AVDS-1790-2C 12 cylinder air-cooled diesel engine provides 750 bhp at a rotational speed of 2,400 rpm and can achieve a maximum cross-country speed of 10 mph to 12 mph and up to 30 mph roadspeed. The cruise range is 312 miles.

The tank can cross water up to 48 in in depth and up to 90 in in depth using the fording kit.

The manufacturer, General Dynamics Land Systems Division, has ceased production of the tank but continues to provide fleet support to the US Army and to user countries worldwide.
